  • is that so...
  • Q: Can you explain the concept of bass-management?
  • A: Bass management (which is used in 90% + of all home theatre systems and most premium car audio systems) uses filters to extract low frequency information from the main channels and then reroutes that information, along with the LFE channel (see below), to a single mono subwoofer. The advantages are overwhelming and include smaller main speakers that are easier to place, better LF response, reduced inter-modulation distortion and more repeatable LF response from room to room (small or large).
  • As a general rule, bass-management should be used in any professional recording studio that is creating content for direct consumer consumption (music, broadcast, radio, DVD etc.) and that is why it is incorporated into all Blue Sky monitoring systems.

  • Q:What is the LFE and how does it work with the subwoofer?
  • A: The LFE is a channel and is not the same as the subwoofer. It’s actually a 120Hz bandwidth limited channel (80Hz for DTS) that has an additional 10 dB of electrical headroom above the 5 main channels. It was created as part of the film version of Dolby Digital to enhance low frequency sound effects, such as large explosions and other LF content which exceeded the headroom of the main channel. Hence the name LFE: Low Frequency Effects and not low frequency bass channel. So, unless you are recording Tchaikovsky’s 1812 Overture with REAL cannons, it doesn’t need to be used in most music applications, but can be usefully in film and multimedia applications.
  • An important note about the LFE channel; never put anything critical to the mix exclusively in the LFE channel. This is because when a Dolby Digital decoder folds down a 5.1 source, it drops the LFE channel completely (poof!).

  • Q:Why don’t your speakers use ports or passive radiators?
  • A: Ports and Passive radiators can increase the efficiency of a speaker system, but because they resonate, they also negatively impact the transient response of the system. Ports can also add noticeable distortion and noise.
  • science fiction / fact
  • Fiction: I don’t need bass-management, because my speakers are full-range.
  • Fact: Most nearfields are not full-range and most large speakers that are full-range would not work well in and around a desktop, or in small rooms. Only when you have a true full-range monitoring system will you be able to make informed creative decisions. So, don’t settle for the kind of low frequency performance that was around 20 years ago—aspire to that which surpasses what is expected today.
  • Fiction: I have heard that subs don’t work well in small rooms?
  • Fact: If you want more consistent LF performance, greater LF extension and mixes that translate better, there is no easier way to reach these goals than to use a Blue Sky subwoofer—especially in a small room!
  • Fiction: Aren’t 5.1 systems hard to set up?
  • Fact: With literally thousands of Blue Sky systems installed in studios around the world, we have developed a simple methodology to help you get it right. And, if you have any questions, we are here to help.
